“I strive to help each person (be it athlete, coach) achieve their full potential both in and out of the competitive arena, with education, mentorship & respect at the cornerstone of this.!”
BACKGROUND: Originally from Portsmouth in the UK, I've been a keen athlete from a young age and have played a variety of sport throughout my life, though rugby has always been the standout. It was this passion for sport which lead me to earn my Bachelors Degree in Sports Science from Swansea University where I discovered my love for coaching and enhancing athletic performance. I then went on to complete my Masters in Strength & Conditioning before earning my first coaching role in professional sport with the Newport Gwent Dragons rugby team, where I spent 2 years before progressing onto a position with the Welsh Rugby Union for a further 3 years. Wanting to expose myself to a new sporting environment I then made the move to work with the UK Sports Institute, predominantly working with British Triathlon's Olympic & Paralympic programs, though I also got a taste of working within a variety of other sports including BMX Freestyle, Field Hockey & Equestrian - allowing me to experience and work with a fantastic array of personalities from both an athlete and coaching perspective! Following the delayed Tokyo Olympics & Paralympics I was in need of a bit of a change in scenery (thank you Covid-19!) so decided to make the move to Vancouver where I currently reside and work with the Whitecaps soccer team, where I lead on the Rehab and Strength programs for the 1st team.
SPORT PHILOSOPHY: My coaching and management philosophy has always centered around the individual where I strive to help each person (be it athlete, coach) achieve their full potential both in and out of the competitive arena, with education, mentorship & respect at the cornerstone of this. I fully believe in the value of honesty and openness in all my relationships and want to create spaces where people feel heard and safe to provide their valuable input and insight into any situation.
FUN FACTS: Away from work I love all things outdoors (hence the move to Vancouver!), with some of my favorite past times including surfing, scuba diving, snowboarding, hiking, tennis, cricket & the never-ending quest to tire out my border collie, Rupert. I also love spending time with my girlfriend, friends and family in whatever form that takes, though a nice beach will enhance any situation.
While I will admit I have never donned an Artistic Swimming cap in the water, I have always pledged to try out every sport I've worked in so you can hold me to my word on that front - in the meantime I'm looking forward to contributing to the growth and success of Artistic Swimming in BC!
“Artistic swimming hooks you!”
ATHLETE: I started artistic swimming with the Coquitlam Coralinas when I was 6 years old. I was first selected to the Senior National Team when I was 15 years old. At that time, I was the youngest person in B.C. to make a Senior national team so it was a complete shock. When I called my mom to tell her, she wanted to speak to my coach because she didn’t believe me! I competed on the National team for 7 years, living in Montreal and training at the Centre of Excellence for three of those years.
COACH: I was a coach for almost 20 years before transitioning off of the pool deck in 2023. I worked as a coach with a few clubs across the country, as a provincial program coach in BC and was an Apprentice Coach for the National Team in 2008, as well as a Team BC Assistant Coach for the 2011 Canada Winter Games Team.
QUALIFICATIONS: I am a Chartered Professional Coach and have recently obtained my Advanced Coaching Diploma. Additionally, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Coaching. It was while I was working on my degree that I decided to pursue coaching as a profession. It was a chance to combine my two passions in one career: teaching and artistic swimming.
SPORT PHILOSOPHY: I believe that everyone I coach is a person first and foremost. They are not just an athlete that walks onto the pool deck, trains and then does not exist when they leave the building. They are a human being who deserves my respect, honesty, and personal best. Sport has helped shape me to be the person I am today and, for that reason, I strive to do that for my athletes. Sport can teach life skills and, as a coach, my goal for every athlete is for them to grow into confident, successful human beings long after their athletic careers are finished. This philosophy will carry over in to my new role as I work with all the members of this organization.
ARTISTIC SWIMMING IN BC: We have so many successes in BC: our officials at the Olympics, our coaches who make artistic swimming a career, our first athlete with a disability going to national championships, our Masters athletes representing us on the world stage. We have incredible, long-term loyalty from so many passionate people who are willing and wanting to help. Artistic swimming hooks you! We need to tap into that passion to grow our sport.
OUTSIDE ARTISTIC SWIMMING: I am mom to two daughters, Rya and Addisyn. When I am not coaching, you will find me enjoying taking my girls to their many sporting activities - hockey, ringette, swimming, soccer, track & field and whatever else they find the time to do! I guess you can call me a foodie since I love to cook and sometimes post pictures of my food on social media! My favorite place to unwind is Shuswap Lake where I love to waterski, spend time with family, and enjoy the scenery.
FUN FACTS: You could say that water is in my blood. My mom was an artistic swimmer and won medals at National Championships, my sister is a double bronze medalist at the 2003 Canada Winter Games, and Brent Hayden, Canadian Olympic medalist in swimming, is my cousin (2nd cousin but who is keeping track!).

She went on to achieve her Level 2 judge’s certification and has recently been nominated for the national officials' program. During her tenure, the Kamloops Sunrays executive team has worked hard to stabilize the club and create a foundation of programming for recreation, provincial and the newly established national stream programs.
Privately, Mandy works full-time as the Marketing Director for Kelson Group Property Management who operate over 4,500 apartments between British Columbia and Alberta, in ten different cities. Christina is currently the co-founder and VP of a technology consulting company in mining and petrochemical industries in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 1992, she received a bachelor’s degree in international economics in China and MBA degree from a British university in 2003. Her family became Canadian permanent residents in 2003 and then Canadian citizens in 2009.
Her passion towards artistic swimming started with her daughter switching from speed swimming and ballet to synchronized swimming in 2019 when she joined the BC Aquasonics. Along with her swimming through PS, PS HPD and now NS at PWAS, she began to know more about the sport and the artistic swimming community. Especially after she won the championship of PS 13-15 Solo at the 2023 Jean Peters Provincial Championships, she determined to make deeper commitments in this sport and also more contributions to its growth.
Christina is an active volunteer for her child’s school and sport clubs. For the last 2 years, she was the Grant Application writer and Events Organizer for PWAS and volunteered for PS competitions when it was needed.
Since 1992, she has been working in giant international corporations in the private sector. As the VP of the current company, her role and responsibilities are in decision making, strategic planning, setting goals and direction, BD, contracting, HR Management, risk management, financial oversight, and company compliance. She believes that her 31-years of experience working in corporate governance experience can be beneficial to BCAS board.
In addition, Christina speaks English and Chinese and believes her cultural understanding can be an important asset to BCAS board.
In short, Christina’s family loves artistic swimming. They believe in the mission and objectives of BCAS and are inspired by the hardworking of our athletes, coaches, clubs and PSO and so on. Therefore, in order to continuously create a safe and healthy sport development environment for young athletes including her daughter, Christina has a strong desire to contribute her skills, knowledge, effort and time to its growth and success.
Anne-Marie has a passion for our sport that shines through in all the artistic swimming activities in which she participates. She values the important role artistic swimming has in the lives of swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Anne-Marie joined the artistic swimming community 20 years ago, initially as a parent of an athlete and shortly thereafter as a Masters’ athlete in her daughter’s club. She soon got involved as a deck volunteer and Club Board member. Twelve years ago, Anne-Marie extended her participation to include the role of official. In more recent years Anne-Marie has included Educator of Officials in her activities and has facilitated the certification of 30 Officials in the last 6 years. Anne-Marie has served on the BCAS Board since 2015.
When Anne-Marie is not in the pool or on deck, she is enjoying retirement after a lengthy career in a senior leadership role in Supply Chain Management in the consumer products industry. Her skills in this capacity are readily transferable to the role of a Director. As always, Anne-Marie’s passion for our sport continues to shine in all her roles. In December 2021, Anne-Marie was appointed as Vice-President of BC Artistic Swimming.
Ann has had a long involvement with the sport of artistic swimming, beginning as an athlete in her youth and then as a parent to two daughters who competed as national stream athletes with Pacific Wave Synchronized Swim Club and who are now both coaching in the sport. Her volunteer activities in artistic swimming have included serving as a club treasurer, as a meet volunteer (including at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George) and as a Level 1 judge. All of these experiences, together with watching her daughters and their teammates develop into confident and capable young women thanks to their participation in artistic swimming, inspired me to contribute towards promoting the accessibility, growth and excellence of the sport at all levels.
Ann is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CGA) and has held senior financial management roles mainly in the forest products industry. Her focus has been in the areas of accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting. In addition, she has participated in a number of large-scale financial systems implementation and business transformation projects. As a volunteer, Ann served as a director of Pacific Wave Synchro for eight years (2011 – 2019), primarily in the role of treasurer, and recently joined Canada Artistic Swimming’s Finance Committee. Other recent volunteer roles include serving as Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair for The University Women’s Club of Vancouver (2016 – 2018) and, she currently sits on their Constitution and Bylaws Committee.
Carol Stewart has been involved in artistic swimming for over 30 years, as a parent, club executive, meet manager, and official (judge and referee) at provincial and national meets. She is well known as BCAS's Chief Referee, serving in that capacity at most of our meets. Now retired from a long career in human resources with the provincial government, Carol is BCAS's longest serving current Director. She is also a member of the Officials Committee.
Edward moved to Canada in 2000 and has lived in British Columbia since 2005. He is the proud father of three daughters; the eldest two display a natural affinity for Artistic Swimming, while the youngest, at only 1.5 years old, is showing potential. All of them have enjoyed water play at a very young age. Currently, one daughter is at the NS level, and another is at the PS-HPD level.
To better support and connect with his daughters regarding their sport, Edward became an official with the BCAS community. After passing the examination in November 2022, he began serving as a BCAS Judge at events throughout the province. This role has deepened his understanding of the sport and he is eager to contribute to the BCAS athletes and the broader community. On a personal note, Edward has been proficient in freestyle swimming since his undergraduate days. He took part in his first artistic swimming performance during last season's watershow. It was challenging, but he is determined to improve.
In addition to his sporting interests, Edward holds a Master's degree in Software Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Technology from Tsinghua University (THU). His natural inclination is towards listening and solving technical problems. He is hopeful that his expertise in computer software will be valuable in advancing the new CAS judging computer system. Furthermore, he has served as a strata council, the experience enriched his community involvement.
Robin has been a resident of BC since 2011, and Campbell River since 2017. In the last five years she has built a practice providing legal services to the north Island practising primarily litigation. She tries to find collaborative and cooperative resolutions to disputes that can put herclients in a position to move forward in a more positive direction. She regularly deals with difficult personalities and high conflict situations and considers herself a problem solver.
She fell in love with the sport of artistic swimming at the age of 12 years old. She swam competitively for four years in Manitoba until she couldn’t continue high performance training due to injury. She considers these years as formative as she learned teamwork, dedication, hardwork, and self-confidence. She transitioned to the role of official, and briefly as a coach because of her passion for the sport and for supporting young athletes to gain skills which will be useful to them for life, as they have been for her.
Robin took a lengthy break from artistic swimming as her responsibilities as a single mother made it impossible to volunteer her time. Now that she is supported by a wonderful partner, she has been able to return and contribute her experience to the sport. She looks forward to taking on a new role in governance and expects the skills she has gained as a lawyer will be an asset to the board.
