A Special General Meeting of the BCAS membership was held to approve the Society’s new constitution and bylaws, to transition to the new BC Society Act.
Synchro BC’s opportunity for the future is in diversity and nowhere was this more evident than with our Masters Clubs and their athletes. They inspired the province with their growth, diversity, and athleticism as they trained and competed in BC and at the World Championships in Budapest, showcasing synchronized swimming as a lifelong sport. They showed us what is possible. We also took important steps in our adaptive synchro program with programs in more Clubs, renaming all our programming from AWAD to adaptive, and having our first adaptive synchro athlete from BC – Stephanie Papillo – compete at the national championships. Our officials have long been representing BC at a world class level and this year we had several recognized for their achievements:
- Louise Kennedy received the Official of the Year Award from Sport BC - Anne-Marie North received the Presidents’ Award from Sport BC - Heather Archer – Synchro Canada Lifetime Achievement Award - Lisa Balcombe – Synchro Canada President Pin Our high-performance athletes too had remarkable success this year with 4 earning an opportunity to try out for national team programs and Kendall Stirrat, Luiza Vasyleva, and Claire Hein-Salvi selected train with the Junior Team and Next Gen programs. We were also selected to host the Canadian stop of the 2018 FINA World Sers and the Espoir National Championships in Surrey. This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our sport at a pivotal time for our sport in BC. Supporting athletes of all ages and abilities is critical for the growth of synchronized swimming in BC and was the motivation for our organizational restructuring. Organized under three equal, all-encompassing program pillars – Operations, High Performance, and Sport Development – Synchro BC is now structured to provide support to all members, communities, and programs in BC. We have set a foundationfor growth.
