Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns that lead to extraordinary journeys. For Carmen Madson, that journey began watching the Olympics, where she came across artistic swimming for the first time. “I had no idea that artistic swimming was a thing,” she recalls. “I love swimming. And I like the fact that it leans into ballet a lot. I thought, is this a thing that I could actually do?” A quick search led her to Kelowna Dolphins, her local club, and she dove in, starting as an athlete.
Fast forward three years, Carmen is now a competitive Masters artistic swimmer. “I was swimming recreationally for the first two years and this is my first year as a competitive athlete,” she explains. “It’s been challenging and rewarding, especially the choreography, which is both beautiful and demanding.”
Her passion for the sport quickly inspired her to get involved beyond the pool. Carmen began by using her technical skills to manage the club’s website. “I like working with computers and design, so I volunteered to manage the website, which I still do today,” she says.
As she became more engaged, Carmen took on additional roles, eventually stepping into club leadership as Vice President. This year, she became President, where her responsibilities include managing communication between parents and coaches, securing grants, organizing pool time, and handling the club’s budget.
Reflecting on her journey, Carmen believes deeply in volunteering, both for the broader community and the personal fulfillment she’s gained. “Volunteers are vital,” she emphasizes. “Volunteering is really important for the community. It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to provide a service to kids so they can have good, fulfilling lives,” she shares. Her advice to those considering volunteering - “Be patient with yourself. If you believe that you can do it, you can get through any problem that you have. It’s really fulfilling in the end.”
From an unexpected discovery to becoming an athlete, leader, and advocate for her sport, Carmen’s journey is a testament to passion and commitment. Through her leadership and dedication, she helps ensure the future of artistic swimming in her community, creating lasting opportunities for athletes to thrive.
